"There is no time like
the holidays to bring out a list of "how things should be." These
"shoulds" are formed by our own pasts, particularly our childhoods, and as we
plan holiday memories for our children, they ring out louder than the bells on Christmas
morning. Here are some thoughts to keep in mind as you plan your family Thanksgiving,
Hanukkah or Christmas. . ." |

In response to a letter asking why a
father would choose to become distant from his children, Anne Mitchell replied: This is just a guess, but one thing which may be operating here is
guilt...he may be feeling guilty on some level that he's been so out of touch, that he
hasn't made good on the agreed to support, etc etc..
Awhile ago F.R.E.E. polled it's membership, asking them for their
stories as to why at some point they may have been perceived as detached from or
uninterested in their children, when actually they wanted very badly to have contact with
their children. Here are some of the responses, perhaps you may find something within

Here are some of the observed effects
of removing a father to the position of a visitor in a child`s life. "Based on our clinical experience with a number of latency aged and
adolescent girls whose parents divorced during their oedipal years, we postulate that
particular coping patterns emerge in response to the absence of the father, which may
complicate the consolidation of positive feminine identification in many female children,
and is observable during the latency years. We illustrate both the existence of these
phenomena and implications for treatment:. . ." |

In repsonse to the post:
You are grouping all non-traditional families into one large group. There are many
models for families that don't fit the conventional model. If you choose to pick one
particular family model and correct for economic class then, by all means, prove that that
form of non-traditional families do fail their children at significant rates.
